The second series, Ben Harper, husband and father to three different and often difficult children has spent his working life as a dentist. 　　The third season, which covers the administration's third and fourth years in office, starts off with Bartlet announcing his intention to run for reelection and is heavily devoted to the upcoming presidential election. Other prominent plotlines include Congressional investigations into whether Bartlet committed electoral fraud by concealing his MS, a death threat against C.J. and the ensuing relationship she develops with a Secret Service agent assigned to her, the Qumari defense minister Abdul Shareef plotting terrorist attacks against the US, and a troubling meeting between Toby and the President that leaves Bartlet with a bout of insomnia in "Night Five." The season finale, "Posse Comitatus" closes several of these storylines as Bartlet meets his opponent in the elections and reaffirms his commitment to beat him. The episode ends with the president finally deciding to order Shareef's assassination (a legally questionable act) and C.J.'s agent's murder, just after the man threatening C.J. was caught.
　　From a critical perspective, series creator Aaron Sorkin acknowledged in October 2002 that the terrorism-related plots designed to keep the series relevant after the real-life 9/11 attacks were awkward at times, saying "from week to week, you felt like you were writing the show handcuffed, a little bit. I didn't know how to write it anymore. It was a constant search for what I wasn't doing that used to make the show work. [...] Maybe there was a way to make it work; there probably was. 　　Joey begins her first day at Worthington University where she is struggling in her beginners writing class taught by Professor David Wilder who criticizes her first essay about her and Dawson. Audrey Liddell, Joey's brash new roommate from Beverly Hills, proves to be more of an annoyance than a friend with her wild and crazy personality. Dawson, who's continuing his studies at USC with an internship in Hollywood, begins his job on a shaky start when he meets Todd Carr, an arrogant, egocentric, hack film director who gives Dawson a hard time. Meanwhile, Jen pays Pacey a visit, who's lying low as he docks his yacht in Boston Harbor after sailing away the summer. At nearby Boston Bay College, Jen and Jack are invited to their first fraternity party. They persuade Joey to come along with Audrey who seems to get along with Jen and Jack, much to Joey's surprise. Also, Jen meets Charlie, a bass player. She is rude to him, insulting him away, but deep inside feels strongly attracted to him.

　　Law & Order: Special Victims Unit对于一部procedural drama来说，情节及其设计是成功的关键。SVU在这方面是相当不错的，同时也继续着Law & Order系列的传统。对各个主角的私生活，几乎都不接触。这样的好处就是可以使观众随时看任意一集，而不必担心情节不连戏。坏处就是观众群不断地更换。 Easier to attach, easier to detach. L&O: SVU最大的卖点是sex crime。
　　得力于出色的写实派创作班底，《法律与秩序》最厉害的一点是“尽量接近真实”。虽然快节奏的电视剧无法完全还原艰难的司法程序，但该剧仍然力求细节真实。相反，爆炸、飞车、追逐、打斗、枪战之类的场面极少出现，作为主角出现的两个警察在整整22集里一枪都没有开过，查案全靠两条腿一张嘴。相信所有对司法部门有所了解的人都会认同，这才是法律系统真实的运作方式。很多司法界人士和警察都对该剧赞誉有加，喜欢的人说“这就是现实”，不喜欢的人则批评它“像普及教育课，不像电视节目”。该剧的风行，深刻地影响了美国的电视行业，此后出现的警匪电视剧都更加注意纪实味道和团队精神，比如《犯罪现场调查》（CSI）和《纽约重案组》（NYPD Blue）。

He now has a spot as a popular radio Psychiatrist, giving him the chance to spread words of wit and wisdom to the masses. He shares his apartment with his retired cop father, Martin, and his father's physical care assistant, Daphne Moon. Add in brother Niles, Eddie the dog, some bizarre situations and plenty of humour and you've got all the ingredients for an excellent show and worthy successor to Cheers.
